Article Abstract:
Cellular and basic operators are disappointed with the 1998-99 Budget. Excise duty on pagers is cut from 18 percent to 13 percent and for cellphones from 25 percent to 18 percent. The industry had demanded the same duty structure on all industry had wanted a moratorium of two years on license fee payment but has been ignored by the government. It will be collecting a license fee of Rs2,800 crore from operators of cellular and basic services. The industry wanted zero duty on telecom software which at present stands at 30 percent. The Custom duty on telecom parts however has been slashed from 25 percent to 20 percent and integrated circuits from 10 percent to five percent.(uh)

Nokia has come out with its new hand portable phone called Nokia 5110 with features like the Nokia Navi Key concept. This concept makes the phone use very simple through an intelligent menu system. Available in four colours, Nokia 5110 weighs 143 gms with a slim battery. The other features of the phone include a quick alert key, 30 ringing tones, full data capabilities, calculator and three games. It will be priced at around Rs15,500-Rs16,500 depending on local taxes and other levies. (gsh)

MOTOROLA LAUNCHES LANGUAGE `SCRIPTOR'

Motorola has unveiled regional language pagers called Scriptors in India. The pagers are available in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi and Hindi. Tamil Nadu has 88,000 subscribers, which is likely to increase to 1.10 lakh by March 1999. Subscriptions in Pune and Ahmedabad have doubled after the introduction of Marathi and Gujarathi language pagers. (rk)
