FOOD INDUSTRY STILL IN PROCESSING STAGE
Article Abstract:
India accounts for a mere 1 percent of the total global trade in processed foods despite being a leading producer of fruits and vegetables in the world. Though the processed foods industry has attracted a private investment of Rs61,427 crore, poor post- harvest infrastructure has hit the growth of the industry. Though India produces over 40 million tonnes of fruits and 65 million tonnes of vegetables, only 1 percent is converted into value- added product as the Indian processed food industry is yet to be organised on modern scientific lines with integration from production of the key inputs to marketing of the product. Poor co-ordination between the farmers and the processors has affected the industry. The industry will have to set up a cold chain network to prosper. (ag)
