FORTUNE 500 CLUB SOURCES ITS SOFTWARE CODE FROM INDIA

Coca-Cola, British Airways, Swissair, Alcatel, Prudential Insurance, Citicorp, American Express Bank, General Electric, GE Capital Service, PepsiCo, Intel, Informix and SAP are some of the Fortune 500 companies that source software from India. India started as a low-cost sourcing point but has developed as a software producer with brand value now. India has marched ahead of Ireland and Israel in producing quality software. Coca-Cola sources its supply-chain and vendor relationship software from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Prudential is working with TCS to develop customer interface software. British Airways (BA) hived off its software centre in India as a separate company, World Network Services Pvt Ltd. It developed pre-flight and post- flight software for BA. It sells software to other airlines like Air Jamaica, Estonia Air and Maersk Air. Citibank had set up Citcorp Overseas Software Ltd as an export-oriented unit in 1985. It has exported software worth $10.45 million in 1997. Informix has started a second development centre in India for developing RDBMS package. (rk)

CONSULTANCY COs DAVID BELLAMY, WATSON WYATT GET FIPB NOD

The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) has given its nod to David Bellamy of the UK and Watson Wyatt Hong Kong Limited to offer consultancy services in India. The UK company plans to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary to provide consultancy services in areas like offshore oil and gas industry and development of various projects in road, power and telecommunications. The company plans to invest Rs10 lakh in the venture. Watson Wyatt plans to offer consultancy services in the areas of human resources development and has envisaged an investment of Rs1 crore in its project. The foreign equity in the joint venture company, Watson Wyatt India Private Limited will be up to 60 percent, amounting to Rs1 crore in the total paid-up equity of Rs1.67 crore. The foreign equity will be subscribed through Watson Wyatt Holdings (Mauritius) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Watson Wyatt and Company of USA. (gsh)

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has introduced Decision Support System Solution (DSS). It provides solutions in decision support system strategic consulting, data warehouse design and building, development of DSS reports for business and implementing DSS solutions and reviewing effectiveness.
