FRANCE: BOOM IN EDUCATION CD-ROM SECTOR

Since the end of 1997, there has been a large increase in the production and sales of educational CD-ROM software and the market sector has seen a 70% growth in value since 1998, worth in FFr 400mn in turnover. Between the first quarter of 1998 and the same in 1999, there was a 40% increase in sales of education software, worth 25% of the total market turnover, whereas it was only 20% in 1998. In volume, the amount of educational software progressed by 25% between the same dates, from 866 titles available in 1998, to 1,082 in 1999. However, out of the 1,082 products available, 68 products (6.3% of available references) account for 50% of sales in value. In 1999 the return to school registered a large increase in educational software at such a point that the its volume was superior to that of its sales percentage in its sector. It is games however which are leading the CD-ROM market, with 49.9% in 1999 (48.5% in 1998), second is educational packages with 20.9% in 1999 (20.6% in 1998), then pratical CD-ROMs with 19% in 1999 (17.4% in 1998). The most dynamic sector out all the CD-ROMs remains the educational packages.

France: Camif changes call centres into contact centres

Camif has selected the Activox computer engineering firm, and the Genesys solutions, as part of a project to change its call centres into multimedia contact centres, a EUR 1.83mn investment. A four-step process, the French mail order group started this in the second half of 2001 with the installation of a customer e-mail management solution. Fourth step, including extension of the electronic document management system, will take place in 2003. Camif's call centres handled 3.27mn telephone calls in 2001, and 100,000 e-mail messages from customers. The leading player in on-line sales in the mail order business in France with almost 10% of its total activity in 2001 (compared to around 2% for Quelle and 3 Suisses, and 3.5% for La Redoute), Camif expects to turn over EUR 23.6mn on line this year. The company, which operates three call centres (234 positions in total) in three sites in France (Niort, Toulouse and Bordeaux), has 37% of owners of a multimedia computer among its clients.

Emme, the French multimedia CD Rom publisher, has released an encyclopaedia on mushrooms, priced at around FFr 249. The practical CD Rom, available on both PC and Mac, features a useful guide to recognising mushrooms, cooking recipes, and 1,800 photos.
