Article Abstract:
The total number of large and medium commercial garden and DIY centre (>300m[superscript two]) outlets in France, recorded on 1 January 2000, was 3,627, up 1.2% during 1999, with the creation of 49 new outlets. These centres had a total sales surface area of 7,967,661m[superscript two], up 4.5% during 1999, employing 57,939 people. Individually, there were 2,560 DIY stores (>300m[superscript two]) in France, with a total sales surface of 5,055,544, employing 48,537. For the garden centres, there were 1,067 stores, with a sales surface of 2,912,117, employing 9,402 staff. Recorded on the same date, it was Castorama, which had 8 of its outlets placed in the top 10 of the largest DIY stores in France.

FRANCE: BRICOJEM AIMS FOR 100 STORES BY 2002
Article Abstract:
The French DIY and gardening equipment retailer Bricojem intends to increase the number of its franchised stores from 40 in 1998 to 100 in 2002. 12 units will be opened in 1999, notably in Saumur and Annemasse (France). Bricojem is targeting towns with between 10,000 and 20,000 inhabitants, and will open sales outlets of approximately 1,000m[superscript two] via partnership agreements with existing outlets, or the creation of new facilities. The introduction of a personalised computer management system accompanies the group's development plan.

FRANCE: GAMM VERT IN 1999
Article Abstract:
The French number one self-service garden centre chain, Gamm Vert, registered a total turnover (tax included) of FFr 2.2bn in 1999, with the group's fiscal year ending on 31 June 1999. It opened up no less than 50 new stores by the end of December 1999, out of which 19 were opened up in the second half of 1999. 85% of its chain stores now have a sales surface of more than 400 m[superscript two].
