FRANCE: SUPERMARKET AND HYPERMARKET STORES
Article Abstract:
According to the Panorama 2000, there were 9,476 large French food stores as of 1 January 2000, down 0.7% from 1999. There were 2,421 discount stores, up 7.1%, for a total sales space of 1.603mn square metres, up 7.7%. There were 129 new discount stores in 1999, including 50 which were pure new store creations and 79 which resulted from acquisitions or conversions of traditional supermarkets. Lidl remains the leader in the sector, with 735 stores as of 1 January 2000, and 23 pure new stores in 1999, trailed by Aldi with 379 stores, of which 7 were new stores; Leader Price with 323 stores including 2 new stores, and ED le Marche Discount with 304, including 3 new stores. There were 5,925 supermarkets, down 1.9%, for a total sales space of over 6.611mn square metres, while the number of hypermarkets held steady at 1,130 stores, for a total sales space of 6.546mn square metres. There were 34 pure new stores in 1999, but 30 stores close, and 97 stores were lost because they changed their type. There were no pure new hypermarkets created. Intermarche is the leading supermarket retail chain, with 1,570 units trailed by Systeme U with 526, Champion with 510, Stoc with 468, and Shopi with 464. There were 384 Leclerc stores, making it the leader for hypermarkets, followed by Carrefour with 132, Auchan with 119, and Geant with 108.

US: AUCHAN OPENS A SECOND HYPERMARKET

Auchan, the French retail group, opened its first American hypermarket at Houston as part of the O'Field retail chain. This store, which became profitable in 1997, makes an annual turnover of FFr 600mn. Based on this recent success, the group is going to open a second hypermarket southeast of Houston. The new store will be a French-style hypermarket, which is part of the Auchan retail chain, and which will have 10,500 square metres of sales space.

FRANCE: HYPERMARKET GETS ISO 14 001 CERTIFICATE
Article Abstract:
The Auchan hypermarket in La Chapelle-Saint-Aubain, near to Le Mans (Sarthe), is the first French hypermarket to receive the ISO 14001 environmental label of quality. This certification does not include the hypermarket's fuel distribution or shopping centre activity. The outlet now wants to gain the same certificate for the salvage of waste and rain water.
