FRANCE: MORE SOPHISTICATED PET FOOD PRODUCTS
Article Abstract:
In the French super and hypermarkets, the pet food brands are offering more and more sophisticated products to better compete with the specialized shops. In addition to multiplying the small, aluminium formats for cats, the operators introduce more and more products with a positive effect on the pet's health. In the year ended on 27 September 1998, the market totalled 833,982 tonnes, up 0.8% with a turnover of FFr 8.39bn, up 2.4%. Dog and cat foods accounted for 490,738 (up 0.5%) and 343,234 tonnes (up 1.2%) respectively, with a turnover of FFr 4.25bn (up 2.2% for dogs and FFr 4.14bn (up 2.6%) for cats.

FRANCE: INTERMARCHE HIRES YOUNG EMPLOYEES

On 2 February 1999, the Mousquetaires will relaunch their '1,000 jobs, 1,000 young people' scheme. In 1998, 1,099 young people aged under 26 benefited from this programme, and more than half were taken on at Intermarche under a permanent contract. Intermarche's annual staff recruitment needs in the meat and seafood sector are estimated at 300. The Groupement des Mousquetaires takes on approximately 3,000 new staff each year (all sectors included).

FRANCE: LAUNCH OF SELF'S CADDIE RANGE

The Ateliers Reunis Caddie SA has developed Self's Caddie, a line of two shopping carts designed to facilitate arranging articles according to whether they are heavy or fragile. These ergonomically-designed shopping carts are adapted for traditional check-out stands as well as for self-scanning systems. There is an optional scanner offered for self-scanning.
