FRANCE: SUPERCOMPUTER PREPARED BY IBM FOR CNRS
Article Abstract:
Although far behind that of the IBM Asci White unit by Lawrence Livermore, IBM will create Europe's fastest computer, with the power of 1,300 billion operations per second, for 1,800 researchers of the French national research centre, CNRS. This centre has ordered the unit as part of the renovation of its scientific computing research development institute, IDRIS. IBM will combine 256 Power4 processors at a rate of 1.3GHz, in Orsay in October 2001.

FRANCE: PC SALES IN THIRD QUARTER
Article Abstract:
In the third quarter of 2000, a total of 1,056,475 PCs were bought in France, up slightly by 7.8%, compared to that of a year earlier. After losing the lead in the second quarter, Compaq is again leading the French market, with 16.4%, thanks to sales of lap tops. IBM is the second PC-selling company in France, with 14.4%, followed by NEC CI (13.7%), HP (11.6%), Dell (10.5%), Fujitsu Siemens (4.4%), Toshiba (4.2%), Apple (3.5%), and Acer (2.9%).

FRANCE: CEA ORDERS UNIX SYSTEM FROM COMPAQ
Article Abstract:
The French nuclear energy commission, CEA, has ordered a Unix AlphaServer Series SuperComputer, from Compaq, to make up part of its nuclear explosion simulation programme. The Unix computer has a calculation power of 5,000 billion operations per floating point per second. CEA is investing FFr 200mn on the project until 2010.
