FRANCE: GIFF CRITICISES THE TRANSPORT POLICY
Article Abstract:
The Association for Developing Rail Freight (GIFF) protests the gap between reality and the government's objectives concerning freight transport: promotion of piggyback rail transport, increase in railroad resources, and return to quality of service (certain shippers exceed the agreed deadline by 50%). GIFF also says that the Interministerial Committed for Economic and Social Investments Committee has authorised the purchase of only 120 freight locomotives instead of the 400 requested.

FRANCE: VOIES NAVIGABLES DE FRANCE'S OBJECTIVES
Article Abstract:
In an interview with Francois Bordry, the president of Voies Navigables de France (VNF) published by Le Moci magazine, he discussed his company's priorities for river transport. Under the present contractual agreement between the State and Region in the field of transport, French water ways are to get FFr 4.2bn in credits compared with FFr 830mn in the previous contractual agreement. The priorities for the present agreement concern the development of long term strategies related to urban travel and starting partnerships with the SNCF, the French national railroad company, and road carriers. VNF also wants to develop river transport for goods other than bulky products with low added value (such as cereals, fuel, and rubble). These other goods could be automobiles, dangerous products and containers which make it possible to transport many products. The VNF plans to set up training for inland water shipping in order to have young people join the industry with a view to increased traffic.
