The paper presents a review of the Danish market for domestic appliances. Elk b/ServiceRingen is the market leader with a 30% market hare, whereas K kkenland/Snehvide has 15%, Elsalg 15%, Skousen 11%, PS 3%, Electric City 1%, the Norwegian chain Elkj p/El-Giganten 1%, and other players 24%. The Norwegian chain Elkj p opened its first discount store in 1996, and, according to the paper, K kkenland is the chain which has been most negatively affected by the new competitor. Its profit fell from DKr 16-17mn (USD 2.3-2.5mn) to less than DKr 5mn in 1996 and zero in 1997.

Compaq aims at becoming the largest supplier of IT equipment in Denmark within four years. Already by now, the company is the largest PC supplier with a 29% market share. MD Walther Thygesen of Compaq Denmark says there will be a great potential in storage media in the next few years. In addition, Compaq will target markets such as networks and services as well as "traditional" fields such as notebooks, desktops and servers. Compaq's turnover in Denmark is estimated at DKr 3bn (USD 0.4bn) this year, DKr 800mn of which is attributed to Digital's products.

DENMARK: REGARD ACQUIRES FONA
Article Abstract:
Fredgaard, the Danish consumer electronics group, has taken over its debt-ridden rival Fona. The merger of the two chains will result in the creation of the biggest retail chain in Denmark for electronic, music and computer equipment with an annual net turnover of around DKr2.2bn ( US$268mn).
