Factory production rises 35% in personal-computer sector
Article Abstract:
Taiwanese firms saw a 35% increase in factory production in the first half of 1998 to US$6.98 billion, according to the industry-backed Market Intelligence Center. However, the 35% increase in factory production fell short of the 46% growth in first-half production to US$7.53 billion predicted by the center in April 1998. This is because of lower-than-expected output of desktop computers, which jumped 43% to US$3.12 billion during the period compared with an earlier predicted increase of 69%. Taiwan PC makers, the world's third-biggest makers of computer equipment, are growing mainly because of the decision of multinational PC firms to shift production to offshore suppliers to meet demand for machines that cost less than US$1,000.

Factory production rises 35% in personal-computer sector
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's personal computer sector performed exceptionally during the first half of 1998, as companies were able to increase their production output by 35%. The figure, which is way above the projected result, was achieved as a result of the declining rate of machines. Such a gain is not only indicative of the country's expanding market share in computer products but also of the growing popularity of outsourcing measures within the region.
