Fall in line with DDA this autumn
Article Abstract:
The UK Disability Discrimination Act 1995 has many implications for architects not only when they are designing new buildings but also when they make changes to old buildings. All designs must be considered alongside the needs of disabled people. If developers and architects fail to comply with the act they may have to make changes at a later date. Buildings must be changed to allow access by the end of 2004. Employers and education providers must ensure disabled people are not put at a disadvantage. No disabled person should be given a service of a lesser quality.

Update on disabled access
Article Abstract:
Changes to Part M of the UK Building Regulations has made it a necessity for builders to ensure the majority of new houses have enough room internally for a wheelchair to move around and also have access to the property via a ramp if the doorway is not on level ground. The toilet facilities should be large enough to be used by a person on a wheelchair even if the room is too small to accomodate a wheelchair. The Disability Discrimination (Employment) Regulations 1996 call for all buildings open for public use to be fully accessible by the disabled by Oct 2004.
