Funds aim for regional retirement money
Article Abstract:
Asian governments have set up mandatory pension programs while the mutual fund industry has offered more products for retirees' money. Japan is currently reviewing a plan offering more choices while Hong Kong has unveiled a mandatory pension plan that will likely begin at the end of the year 2000. Two studies, one on pension funds, the other in representative funds showed similar results. Growth pension funds posted a median return of one percent in 1998, balanced funds six-and-one-half percent in 1998, and stable funds, eight percent in 1998.

Companies hope index funds catch on around the region
Article Abstract:
Asia has been targetted as the next prime destination for index funds after making a rousing debut in US markets. The funds, which charge lower fees than actively managed funds, have actually outperformed their counterparts in 1998. Index funds attract investors by matching the components and returns of a chosen market such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or Standard and Poor's 500-stock index. As of Jul 1999, only Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea have index funds in the Asian region.

Acquiring a taste for value: investors may start to shun growth stocks
Article Abstract:
Fund companies and experts predict that value funds in Asia would experience a turnaround as investors seek value-oriented stocks in place of growth stocks that are getting increasingly high-priced. The rationale in the shift is the argument that value stocks that are cheaper would be less likely to plummet. As a result, value-oriented mutual funds are picking up and have reported improvements from the 1st qtr 1999 decline as well as losses in 1998.
