Family values: the bargain breaks

Several new studies analyze the long-term socioeconomic effects of rising divorce rates on all family members. Divorce effects British women especially harshly because pension rights are rarely divided equally in the UK. The effects on children are found to be mostly psychological.

Princeton University sociologists report that children of divorced parents proved more likely to leave school and home early and have babies outside wedlock than children who lost parents through death or whose parents remained together.

Unhappy families
Article Abstract:
Children of divorced parents are more likely to be unsuccessful in life, and single mothers often face poverty. Governments need to educate couples about the benefits of remaining together and reward those who do so.
