Thailand blazes trail: Asian hinterlands become new magnet for investors
Article Abstract:
The surge of foreign investments in the hinterlands of Asia is enlivening the economies of these non-urban regions. These areas, once considered too distant, are attracting investors as a result of better infrastructure, lower costs and attractive government incentives. Although this trend is not without its problems, such as pollution and inflation, Asian governments are promoting investment in provinces to bridge the gap between rich and poor regions. This trend is most pronounced in Thailand, the government of which is actively promoting economic movement out of Bangkok.

A pause for breath?
Article Abstract:
Economists predict that 1996 economic growth rates in Asia will not equal those of 1995 but will significantly increase in 1997. Economists, who attribute 1996 growth rates to weak exports, caution that political uncertainty may also affect 1997 performance. Consensus Economics Inc. forecast that, in 1997, East Asian economies will realize 7.8% gross domestic product growth and Southeast Asia, 7.2%.
