Fear and loathing in Malaysia's heartland
Article Abstract:
The Islamic Party of Malaysia runs Kelantan state, which is an important focus in planned elections in Malaysia. The election has to be held by mid-2000, and involves the ruling United Malays National Organization and four opposition parties. The opposition is hoping to secure seats in the Malay heartland. Many people are critical of the way that the government has dealt with former finance minister, Anwar Ibrahim. The opposition faces a difficult task, and may not even secure all the seats in the heartland.
