Fiat lux
Article Abstract:
Architectural firm Hellmuth Obata and Kassanbaum included some unusual brickwork features in its design for St Barnabas Church in Dulwich, London, England. The new church is less instantly visible than the old one, which was destroyed by fire in Dec 1992, but is a very confident building. Its design reflects the wish of the parish that it should be a place of light and openness, with the western elevation of the chapel being in transparent glass. The design uses brick diaphragm walling. Projecting headers at four-course intervals are an external expression of bonded cross ribs.

The Spanish connection
Article Abstract:
The first phase of the redevelopment of the Chapel Wharf area of Salford, England, involved the construction of a pedestrian crossing between Salford and Manchester, England. This crossing, known as Trinity Bridge, was designed by Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. Its deck is paved with clay pavers, which offer an attractive contrast with the white structure of the rest of the bridge. Clay pavers are also used extensively on the surrounding Chapel Wharf walkway.
