Fiat profit skids as car division stills struggles

Fiat SpA posted a decline in its pretax profits for the first-half of 1999. The Italian car maker posted a 64% drop in profits to 377 million euros. During the same period in 1998, Fiat posted 1.03 billion euros in profits. The company's car division has continued to struggle financially as a result of weak demand in South America. Fiat has also been hurt by price wars in the European region.

Fiat SpA posted a 3% rise in revenues and a 10% increase in operating income for the 2001 first-quarter. The figures were at the low-end of what analysts had forecasted. However, the car maker hopes to post approximately 1.1 billion euros in operating income for the 2001 year.
