Jilt and tilt: Israel stops wooing Taiwan and turns to China
Article Abstract:
Israel sought strong relations with Taiwan until the mid-1980s when the Middle East peace process made China a reasonable ally and now, despite Taiwanese efforts, Israel is avoiding contact so as to protect its China interests. Agricultural, finance and defense industries in Israel support the pro-China stance and protection of this relationship caused Israel to withdraw from a $300 million contract with Taiwan in Apr 1995. Only Masha Lubelsky, industry and trade minister is still trying to support an Israel-Taiwan relationship and she is likely to fail.

Shopping spree: liberated post-Soviet citizens flock to Dubai for bargains
Article Abstract:
Dubai draws 500,000 visitors annually from the Commonwealth of Independent States to shop in its inexpensive duty-free stores and, often, resell goods at home for a profit. CIS residents make up the largest share of Dubai's visitors and spend $1 billion each year, 10% of the GNP. Chelnoks, traders who buy in Dubai and sell in the CIS, say Dubai has prices only China can beat and good service to boot. Locals enjoy the commerce, but friction sometimes occurs between visitors and the deeply Muslim locals.

No promised land: Chinese workers find little joy in Israel
Article Abstract:
Israeli employers who have had trouble with guest workers from other countries seem delighted with their experience with Chinese laborers. One attraction is the Chinese govt's active involvement in the deals, meaning it tends to side with employers in disputes. The Chinese are also reportedly more disciplined and submissive despite harsh conditions. Israeli human- rights groups say they are concerned about exploitation, as well as collaboration between employers and a dictatorial regime.
