Fiji cuts back after letting rip!
Article Abstract:
Purse seiners working in the Western and Central Pacific are going to be banned by Fiji as per the environmental requirements laid down by the Forums Fisheries Agencies (FFA) as this type of fishing is killing juvenile Tuna fish, which otherwise accounts for F$40 million and F$50 million of Fiji's earnings. However, the number of FFA vessels registered to work in EEZs was 1126 in 1999-2000, which increased to 1264 at the end of 2000-2001. The number of fishing vessels in the region owned by Fijians is only 2 out of the 96 vessels.
