Final frontier
Article Abstract:
China hopes to secure new sources of oil from the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang Autonomous Region in the far west. New sources are vital to preventing China from becoming an importer of oil. Unfortunately, the Tarim lies within the Taklimakan Desert where fierce temperatures, remoteness and lack of roads will complicate the development of new oil fields. To spur production, the state-owned China National Petroleum Corp has declared a 72,000-square-kilometer zone open to foreign exploration. Chinese forecasts of how much oil the Tarim will yield may prove to be too optimistic.

From black to green: Indonesian mine yields clean-burning coal
Article Abstract:
Adaro Indonesia PTis set to produce clean coal from its mine in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The low sulphur and ash content of Adaro's Envirocoal makes it a strong competitor in the coal market. However, Envirocoal's market price will be affected by its high moisture content although trends towards pricing based on environmental factors could offset this. Adaro expects the US to be its largest buyer and plans to produce 20 million tonnes by the year 2000.
