Hair trigger
Article Abstract:
The long-running dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir intensified on Oct 15, 1993 when Indian forces laid siege to the Hazratbal mosque in Srinagar, Kashmir. This mosque is especially significant to Kashmir's Muslims, who make up most of the population, because it contains a holy relic: a hair believed to derive from the Prophet Muhammad's beard. The siege increases the chance of another Indo-Pakistani war, which is worrisome because both countries have nuclear weapons. Each countries' internal politics may inhibit diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully.
