Financial reform is in the forefront
Article Abstract:
Taiwan has embarked on a financial restructuring to make markets more efficient and enable its stock exchange to meet international standards. In the 1980s, the stock exchange was riddled with corruption and it operated like a gambling den where foreigners were barred from owning shares. In the middle 1990s, after a stock market crash, participants have begun to be regarded as respectable investors and foreign investors have been awarded with more generous ownership rights.

China's Class B shares stall despite steps to boost allure
Article Abstract:
China's much lambasted Class-B-share market continues to be stagnant six months into 1998. In light of government plan to sell interests in state-owned enterprises, the hard-currency stock market should have seen the number of listed firms rise by a third since as many as 20 companies were anticipated to add their shares to the market. The Class-B-share market was established in 1991 to allow some Chinese firms to be exposed to global accounting standards and practices.

Stock exchange outlines three-year plan
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange outlined its newest three-year proposal that includes simplifying trading and assuming additional regulatory responsibilities. The report has been criticized for failing to resolve the lack of integration in trading. The exchange has elected to drop most of the suggestions made in 1997 by McKinsey & Co. Moreover, a proposal by the exchange to adopt more regulatory function may aggravate a row with the Securities and Futures Commission.
