Fincantieri awaits go-ahead for work on Improved Sauro submarines
Article Abstract:
Fincantieri anticipates obtaining a contract from the Italian Navy for the modernization of the Improved Sauro-class submarines Primo Longobardo and Gianfranco Gazzana Priaroggia. The deal is valued at over $60 million, and will mainly include the deployment of German-supplied STN Atlas Elektronik ISUS 90 integrated sonar, command and weapons control systems at Fincantieri's Muggiano yard near La Spezia, Italy. The program is intended for making the new boats, constructed in the early 1990s, meet a performance standard similar to that of the new German-designed and Fincantieri-constructed Type U-212A submarines which are to be launched in the coming decade.
