Fine-tuning
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government appears to be easing back the pace of economic reform in China. Indicators of this intention include the advice given to local governments to restrain the sale of state-owned enterprises, the delaying of a deadline associated with housing reforms, and the retreat on grain sales liberalization. Analysts agree, however, that this sort of government activity does not indicate a decreasing commitment to reform. They perceive it to be fine-tuning in a government committed to the maintenance of social stability and a GDP growth rate of 8%.

Softly, softly
Article Abstract:
Chinese software companies are beginning to capture a significant share of the domestic market. Many of China's 13,000 software companies could never compete with major international firms but some, including Stone Rich Sight International, Way Ahead Software and Golden Disc, have progressed rapidly enough to become serious competitors. Analysts forecast that Chinese sales of commercial software will reach $2 billion by 2000, and that local companies will increase their market share to 50% by that date.
