First safety, then civility
Article Abstract:
The approach to policing in New York and Boston can be contrasted to show Boston in a favorable light, since crime has fallen in both areas, yet complaints against the police have fallen in Boston and risen in New York. The Boston approach is similar in many ways to that of New York, but there is more willingness among the police to cooperate with community groups and other bodies. Teenage gangs were a problem in Boston, and crime in New York is linked to a wider range of sources. Despite this and other differences, observers argue that New York could learn from Boston.

The dark side of zero tolerance
Article Abstract:
'Zero-tolerance policing' has become fashionable world wide following its introduction in New York, but there is concern about this policy in New York following the murder of Amadou Diallo. The policy has involved constant searching of young black men. Other cities have reduced their crime rates using other methods, such as coordination between black leaders, the police and probation officers in Boston, and a drive to reduce the numbers of guns on the streets.
