Fischler sopesas un embargo a Portugal por las 'vacas locas'
Article Abstract:
Due to the many cases of mad cow disease reported in Portugal in 1998, the EU's Agriculture commission could decide to ban exports of beef from Portugal to the EU. A report to be presented on October 1, 1998 by the Portuguese government, informing of the exact situation. According to Portugal's ministry of agriculture, there were 53 new cases of BSE in 1998. Since 1994 a total 147 cases have been reported. Although Portugal claims it does not export beef, and a ban would be therefore useless, the European Commission has confirmed that some 1,555.9 tonnes of beef were exported by Portugal to the EU in 1997. The EU agriculture commissioner claims the situation in Portugal is very serious but he will wait for the conclusions of the report to be made on October 1st.
