Floating Baht
Article Abstract:
The banking boat that plies the canals of western Bangkok is run by the Government Savings Bank, making banking services available throughout Thailand. Although it lacks technology it offers a personal service to its 8,000 customers along its 30 kilometre route. Although the GSB has plans to install its 90 Bangkok branches with ATM machines during 1997, there is no threat to the floating branch. Its main expense, apart from salaries, is petrol which is about $250 a month and employees have a certain freedom envied by their land based counterparts.

Artistic refugees: they may be shunned at home but outsiders warmly embrace contemporary Thai artists' work
Article Abstract:
Thailand's leading contemporary artists are reviled at home and lionized abroad, thanks to a dearth of local art critics and professional curators. The Japan Foundation Asia Center's selection of controversial artist Vasan Sitthiket for its Asian Modernism show typifies the problem. Top National Gallery figures in Thailand opposed the move, but finally yielded and agreed to send works by old masters as well. Vasan's sculptures, paintings, and other works are fiercely critical of modern Thai society.

Thinking big: underappreciated at home, a Thai artist's massive works are celebrated overseas
Article Abstract:
Thai artist Montien Boonma feels that he is better appreciated overseas and his work is much in demand for shows. He is the only Thai artist to have solo exhibitions outside Asia, but his installation art requires a lot of space, and therefore does not appeal to the masses. He uses expensive materials, but most galleries now pay for material and transport costs. Boonma continues to be inspired by the country that mostly ignores his achievements.
