Asia, U.S. dispute agenda of December WTO forum
Article Abstract:
Several Asian countries have expressed opposition to the inclusion of corruption and labor standards issues in the agenda of the upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting in Singapore. In the annual conference of the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations, Indonesian Pres. Suharto stated that the WTO should focus on trade and that discussions on such issues would be politically risky and untimely. The Clinton administration wants the WTO meeting to examine the relationship between trade and labor standards.

Asia's middle class poses challenge for marketers
Article Abstract:
Asia's rising middle class has often been characterized as an affluent group with a great appetite for new consumer fads. However, marketing professionals are discovering that the Asian middle class is extremely diverse and that its demographic characteristics sharply differ according to country. For example, skilled office workers dominate the middle class in nations such as Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. In Taiwan, business owners form the largest group in the country's middle class.
