Article Abstract:

GEC-Marconi is developing the Knighthelm helmet-mounted display (HMD) for the operational requirements of the German BWB's Heeresflieger UHT multi-role fire support Tiger pilots. The Germans were prompted to define its own HMD specifications based on the perception that current night-vision systems are unsuitable for their requirements, which include the capability to provide a notable static and dynamic performance for piloting and rapid gun, rockets and air-to-air missiles firing. The Knighthelm HMD, which heavily conforms with the German BWB specifications, addresses weight, center of gravity, display performance, comfort and field of view factors. The HMD also offers night vision, night vision with symbology overlay, symbology stand-alone, FLIR, FLIR with symbology, as well as eliminates pilot disorientation and situations awareness problems.
