Making tracks
Article Abstract:
A fashion for tracking stocks has arisen in the US, where Disney and AT and T have considered them as a way of spinning off certain operations. These stocks do not provide a claim to a company's assets though they are supposed to reflect a subsidiary's fortunes. The idea is that value from profitable subsidiaries can be unlocked since they can be treated as if the had become separate companies. Companies with Internet subsidiaries have found them useful, as have some biotech companies.
