Food for thought
Article Abstract:
Genetically modified (GM) crops will cover some 40 million hectares in 1999 compared to zero hectares of commercially cultivated crops. Consumers increasingly oppose GM crops though they could allow for crops to be resistant to pests amd to weedkillers, cutting production costs. This could mean lower prices if agricultural markets were free, though they rarely are. Opposition has been especially strong in Europe, and there is little public discussion of the topic in the US. Opposition is becoming a serious obstacle to the dissemination of this technology.
