To have and to hold: controversial reform could reshape Japan Inc
Article Abstract:
The major holding companies that dominated the corporate landscape in Japane early in the century may be making a comeback, after the Liberal Democratic Party announcement that business groups would be permitted to restructure themselves as holding companies. Companies such as the Mitsui Group, Daiei and Normura Securities are considering such a move, believing that the new rules could help them to become more efficient. There is concern from others though that groups could become too powerful, and they are awaiting details of the proposal with regard to taxation and the sorts of companies that could be eligible.

Article Abstract:
Jazz guitarist Eugene Pao seems ready to move beyond Hong Kong and into the international arena where his art form is more widely appreciated. Now 36, he performs live as well as composing and doing studio work, but a CD coming out from premier label Blue Note in 1996 should introduce him to a broader audience. In 'By the Company You Keep,' he is backed by some of the world's top jazz musicians, a testament to his reputation. No ethnic Chinese has ever had an impact in jazz, but Pao, 36, could become one of the best.

Life on the margins
Article Abstract:
The Miao people of Guizhou, China, came from Southeast Asia and settled in Guizhou during the Ming period from 1368 to 1644. The Miao are famous for handwoven and embroidered textiles worn with silver jewelry. They are eager to sell traditional items to foreigners because they live in a poor, landlocked and mountainous region.
