Former foes of Hong Kong council now seek seats
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's change of sovereignty has led present legislators to aspire for positions on the new legislature, including those who initially opposed it. Thirty four of the present legislators are competing for 60 seats in the new body that is expected to last for a year after the promised 1998 elections. Different speculations regarding the provisional legislature have come out, including views that it is unnecessary and unwise. A public survey noted that 40% of Hong Kong residents considered that it is illegal for China to create a provisional legislature, while 22% believed it has legal basis.
