Here come trouble: Western countries link Asian workers' rights to trade
Article Abstract:
Western governments and other bodies are moving on several fronts to renew the argument over labor issues in Asia, arguing that the World Trade Org is an appropriate forum for setting minimum labor conditions. Asians, cynical about the pressure, say the West should give more development aid, while Westerners insist talks could prevent even greater tensions. Senior French and US officials are driving much of the debate, perhaps to bar labor groups and other free-trade opponents from more directly controlling the agenda.
