Fossil in the making: Japan finances Mongolian steel mill
Article Abstract:
A mini steel mill being financed by the Japanese in Mongolia's Darkhan city is facing serious economic problems. The mill was to use Mongolian scrap metal as its feedstock, and have an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes of steel products. Unfortunately, Mongolia is finding it difficult to repay its second loan of 1 billion yen to Japan's Export-Import Bank, which has provided a four-year loan of 8 billion yen. Other problems include scarcity of scrap and lack of finance to develop iron-ore mines for producing sponge iron as a scrap substitute.

Life on the brink: Mongolians wonder how long the power will last
Article Abstract:
Ulan Bator, Mongolia's No. 4 power plant, which supplies electricity and heat for two-thirds of the country, has been experiencing mechanical failures and limited supply of coal reserves. The breakdown of a conveyor belt supplying coal to the boilers in Jan 17-19, 1993 scared Mongolians with temperatures dropping to -30 degrees centigrade at night. Although the energy crisis has ceased with extra coal supply from Russiaand spare parts from the US, another breakdown would have significant economic consequences.

Troubled transition
Article Abstract:
Mongolia's shift to a market economy is being hampered by minimal free-enterprise growth despite diminishing state production. This has resulted in inflation and unemployment. The economy contracted 16% in 1991 due mainly to the drop in aid and technology from the former Soviet Union, a lack of access to hard currency and an industrial slowdown.
