The natural formula that's making Body Shop a winner
Article Abstract:
Britain's Businesswoman of the Year for 1985 was Anita Lucia Roddick, managing director of Body Shop International PLC, a firm that markets beauty products from around the world. Among the firm's products are: tsubaki oil from Japanese camellias, shea-butter oil from Ghana, jojoba oil form Arizona, aloe vera products from New Mexico, pineapple products from Sri Lanka, cocoa butter products from Tahiti, and a seaweed preparation known as anfeltia conccina from Hawaii. Roddick started her natural product marketing venture with a $6,000 bank loan, and in ten years has developed the hair and skin product marketing operations to include 170 store outlets in 16 countries. In 1985 Body Shop group pretax profits were $2.9 million on sales of $14.2 million. Marketing and product development techniques used by the Body Shop are discussed.

Back from the brink, Mexico's giant Alfa slims down for hard times
Article Abstract:
Grupo Industrial Alfa S.A. (Monterrey, Mexico) is a conglomerate company involved in heavy industry, hotels and other business segments, and is Mexico's largest private enterprise. Despite 1985 sales of $1 billion, Alfa continues to operate with one-fourth the number of managers it employed in 1980. With corporate debt of $2.9 billion and a reported operating loss of $116 million for 1985, Alfa has laid off 20,000 employees, sold several subsidiary operations, and plans to restructure its debt in order to survive. Current and proposed debt structures for Alfa are discussed. The company's own structure makes the debt structure more complicated than necessary; Alfa is a holding company with nine sub-holding companies and more than 100 operating companies that depend for financing from hundreds of bank creditors.

BET gambles on a new image
Article Abstract:
Nicholas Wills, managing director of British Electric Traction Co. PLC (BET), joined the company in 1982 and, with its new chairman, Hugh Dundas, began the process of transforming the conglomerate's image. The company is now emphasizing its cable television operations and recent U.S. acquisitions, while planning a second round of investment in Asia and on the continent. BET is also taking a more hands-on management approach, which it hopes will give it more control over the firm's operations at the corporate level.
