Fragile prospects
Article Abstract:
Chinese state-owned Shanghai Heng Tong Glass Co. took over Hua Tong glass factory in Cambodia in 1995 after the factory declined almost into disuse. The investment indicated China's desire to establish good relations with Cambodian Co-Premier Hun Sen. The factory re-opened in Mar 1997, amidst promises of further investment and job creation, but ceased production six months later due to poor orders. The company maintains that it will re-commence production when it attracts sufficient custom, but Chinese workers are discouraged by violence during Hun Sen's Jul 1997 coup.

Power plan
Article Abstract:
The Chinese Communist Party's central committee concluded its fifth plenum on Sept 29, 1995, approving a strategy of slower growth to maintain economic stability as well as a reshuffling of senior military officials. The next five-year plan targets 8%-9% growth through 2000, and slightly over 7% in the following decade. President and party General Secretary Jiang Zemin showed his power in appointing two supporters to the Central Military Commission, though Deng Xiaoping's former private secretary also won a seat.
