Article Abstract:
The decision by the Thai government to allow market forces to determine the value of the baht has served to boost confidence in the prospects for the country's economy. This is because the baht will now more closely reflect key trends in the Thai economy. Experts accept that there will be considerable volatility initially, but believe that there will not be widespread panic. Floating the baht will not resolve all the country's economic difficulties, however, and many observers believe that further problems are likely to emerge shortly.

The burden of baht
Article Abstract:
Many observers are currently expressing rather negative views about the Thai economy. This situation has not been helped by the performance of the baht, which has fallen by 2% in value since late 1996. The currency's inability to keep pace with the dollar is damaging companies which are exposed to dollar debt, as well as pushing up interest rates and pulling down the stock market. This will create problems for the Thai government, which will lose credibility if it cannot revive confidence in the economy.

Home truths: The unpegged baht is newly exposed to domestic politics
Article Abstract:
Thailand's baht has reached a new low against the US dollar, and it appears to be dragging regional currencies down too. The currency crisis indicates the new reality for Thai investors, and analysts are concerned that following the floating of the baht, the destiny of the economy has been put in the hands of the government.
