Article Abstract:
The status of women in Japan is slowly changing. The number of women in the workforce increased from 32% in 1975, to 40% in 1997. The birth control pill is due to be legalized soon, and there has been an increase in sexual harassment suits. However, Japanese women remain ambivalent about feminism.

Feminism reaches Japan
Article Abstract:
Japanese women still have little power in business or politics, although 99-year-old Shidzue Kato has been campaigning for women's rights since the 1930s. Women in the workforce have increased very slowly since the unenforceable Equal Employment Opportunities Bill was passed in 1985.

There has been a dramatic upsurge in voluntarism in Japan over the past couple of years, particularly since the great earthquake in Kobe in Jan 1995. Social factors that have led to this new social development are described.
