Free, fair and futile?
Article Abstract:
The results of the 1999 Indonesian elections are to be announced on Jul 26 1999. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Stuggle (PDI-P) is likely to have won the biggest share of the vote, followed by Golkar, which had been the ruling party. Neither party is likely to have a majority of seats in parliament. There are some 500 members of parlaiment, and they and 200 further representatives will form the People's Consultative Assembly, which elects a new president in 1999, and can amend Indonesia's constitution.

Resistance is not futile
Article Abstract:
Mosquitoes, which carry malaria, have become increasingly resistant to such pesticides as DDT. The insects have evolved, and their proteins have changed in such a manner that these insecticides no longer kill them. The mosquitoes also seem to have changed their behavior.

The way that malaria evolved and became a health problem for humans is examined in detail. There is a view that malaria may have emerged with farming, due to pools being left on cleared land.
