China shouldn't abandon big projects
Article Abstract:
The problems resulting from the construction of the Three Gorges Dam should not dampen the spirit of Chinese government officials. Problems include woobly foundations, massive funding, environmental concerns and the weakening support of government officials. In fact, Premier Zhu Rongji has ignored the work being done on the dam by not including it in his annual report on government projects. Despite such problems, Chinese leaders should proceed with large and highly beneficial infrastructures.

Qingdao offers a little slice of Bavaria on the Yellow Sea; Germans left legacy of solid granite buildings and fine wine on China's Riviera
Article Abstract:
Qingdao is a beautiful coast town situated between Shanghai and Beijing that was populated by Germans at the turn of the 19th century. The edict of the Kaiser for Germans to find themselves a place in the sun was answered by the discovery of the place in 1897. The town was built into a treaty port made of solid granite. Its strategic location coupled with an ideal Mediterranean climate provides a good reason why the Chinese wrenched it back from the Germans.
