Terror in Timor
Article Abstract:
East Timor was invaded by Indonesia after Portugal abandoned its former colony in 1974. Famine and massacres then claimed many lives. There has been agreement between Portugal and Indonesia that East Timor should be offered independence or increased autonomy inside Indonesia, and a ballot is planned to allow the population to choose between these options. Meanwhile, the plan is opposed by the army stationed in East Timor, which has armed militias which are carrying out terrorist activities against those who favor indepedence for East Timor. Indonesia should disengage from East Timor.

The violent reaction to East Timor's voice
Article Abstract:
A referendum on independence has been held in East Timor on Aug 30 1999, with almost all those eligible casting their votes. The voting is likely to favor independence, and the militia, which opposes independence, has responded with violence. There has been concern about the time it would take for the United Nations (UN) to tackle the problem, and New Zealand has offered to send troops with no mandate from the UN, if necessary. Some elements in Indonesia are concerned that separatist movements could be encouraged elsewhere in Indonesia if East Timor is to be allowed independence.
