From squares to pyramids
Article Abstract:
A number of Japanese management practices, such as decisions based on consensus, and stakeholder capitalism, have been admired in western countries, though this has changed. These practices have benefits such as increasing employee loyalty, and making investment in training worthwhile, but there are problems with these methods when demand is not increasing. Lifetime employment becomes expensive when companies are under pressure to cut costs. A focus on stockholders means that attention has to be paid to job creation through fostering small businesses and stimulating parts of the old economy.

Who wants to be a sarariman?
Article Abstract:
Japanese graduates once wanted to work for big companies, but this is changing, and there is greater admiration for entrepreneurs. The Japanese economy has tended to be geared to mass production, and homogeneity has been encouraged by the bureaucracy. Changes in the labor market have led to changes in attitudes, with unemployment rising among younger men. The government is seeking to encourage young companies through greater aid. There is a need for investors, brokers and analysts specialising in growth companies.
