Sue Muller has modernized the 139-year-old shop dummy business Proportion. She led a management buy-out of the company when it went into receivership in 1991 and has since introduced innovative new products in consultation with her creative designer Bryan Bale. The company introduces new dummy collections twice a year, using different shapes, materials and colours. Proportion, which had 14 employees and a turnover of 850,000 pounds sterling when Muller joined in 1990, is now planning international expansion.

Most UK employers affirm that they regard the provision of childcare for working parents as a good thing, but few actually go as far as to provide childcare for their staff. Employees still experience finding reliable childcare as very stressful, and family responsibilities are a very common cause of sickness absence. The government's National Childcare Strategy, which encourages family-friendly working practices, has had a mixed reception.
