Improving Cafeteria Patrons' Waste Disposal
Article Abstract:
A study of behavioral interventions for waste disposal control is presented. The setting for the study is a university cafeteria where customers must return plates and deposit trash in containers. The study's aim was to determine whether additional trash containers, use of prompts, and implied punishment contingencies would alleviate waste disposal problems. Results of the study show that the addition of extra containers and the use of prompts helped solve the waste disposal problem. The two interventions were more successful when used together. The interventions are cost effective. The study techniques are applicable to community problems.

Fungus the bogeyman
Article Abstract:
During World War II, large expanses of trees were cut down for the war effort, and subsequent to the war, because of the combination of a post-war housing boom and a shortage of trees, the trees were able to grow for only 50 years or less before they were cut down and used for building. This affected the durability of timber profoundly, and the result is that many post-war houses have problems with dry rot and wood borer.

Going with the floe
Article Abstract:
Film director, Caroline Underwood and her film crew, traveled 700 kilometers to north of Arctic circle and had to wait for days for the animals to come while directing a sequence for Lords of Artic, a program on the impact of climate change on Artic wildlife. The Artic is far from being an empty, frozen wasteland, if one takes the time to notice the nuances of the delicately balanced marine ecosystem.
