Funky, for a day at least
Article Abstract:
The new South African president, Thabo Mbkei, has been inaugurated, and he faces a number of challenges. AIDS, unemployment, poverty and crime are pressing problems, and economic growth would help bring some improvement. Growth has been hampered by the low price of gold and high rates of interest. There are also skill shortages and a low propemsity to save. Privatization is one policy that could help the economy as could a slimmer civil service and greater incentives for investment from abroad and domestic investors.

The end of the miracle?
Article Abstract:
Economic growth in South Africa has started to decline but is likely to stabilize at a modest rate. The greatest threat to stability in South Africa is violent crime, and the government has so far taken only small steps to curb crime. Managing racial tensions is another challenge for the government.
