The success of Hasbro's talking toy Furby in the US market has not escaped the attention of Asian toy makers. Clones of the product are expected to come from the world's center for toy manufacturing, which may ease the acute shortage of the toy. Furby's immense success has important implications for Asia's toy companies. It indicates that makers of the next generation of toys will have to be knowledgeable about electronic products.

China Steel forecasts slump

China Steel Corp, the biggest steelmaker in Taiwan, reported it expects a somber outlook of weak prices and feeble regional and local demand to plague Taiwan's steel industry until at least the second quarter of 1999. The forecast came following the company's announcement of some of its biggest ever price cuts. The company on Nov 20, 1998 disclosed price reductions of roughly 5% for major products.
