The public sector telecom major, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), recorded a 78 percent rise in net profit to Rs898.4 crore for 1997-98 (Rs504.7 crore in 1996-97). The improved performance is attributed to increase in volumes and operational efficiency. Usage of services increased by 21.23 percent. Operating profit margins increased to 19 percent. Revenue from internet services increased by 235 percent to Rs59.3 crore. Its scrip currently trades at Rs850 . Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) has posted a growth of 73 percent in net profit at Rs806.3 crore and 17.6 percent growth in net sales at Rs6,129.7 crore for 1997-98. Its other income was Rs266.1 crore (Rs74.7 crore in 1996-97). Its operating profit margin has increased to 18.97 percent. The income from lease lines and internet has moved up by 64 percent to Rs270 crore (Rs165 crore). Income from internet has increased by 235 percent to Rs59.3 crore (Rs17.7 crore). Its traffic volumes have increased from 1,385 million minutes to 1,679 million minutes. It is planning to spend Rs1,200 crore on capital expenditure in the next five years. (rk)

The rise in profits is because of a 21 percent increase in traffic volumes. Its operating margins went up from 15.8 percent to 18.97 percent in 1997-98. Income from operations has gone up from Rs6,129.7 crore from Rs5,210.6 crore in 1996-97. VSNL's total revenue stands at Rs639.59 crore of which the other income component is Rs266.1 crore. (uh)
