Gaz de France was approved for privatization by the French government leading the way for a merger with Suez S.A. also of France. Energy workers demonstrated in Paris before the passing of privatization legislation fearing less job security and increased gas prices at Gaz de France.

Five EU nations agree to link power markets

Energy producers, regulators, and ministers from Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands have agreed to develop a single price zone under market coupling as of January 1, 2009. Under the agreement, price differences will only occur due to insufficient capacity.
